The "Red Book" AKA: Developing Number Knowledge for 7-11 year olds

 

 At the beginning of the book Bob Wright and Pamela Tabor refer to progression of mathematizaiton of arithmetic. They state that there are 8 domains that need to be fostered in order for students to progress in mathematizaiton. Progressive mathematization is a students mathematical sophisticaiton over a period of time. The eight domains include: structuring numbers, extending the range of numbers, decimalizing, unitizing, distancing the setting, notating, formalizing, and generalizing.

After my work with CGI (Cognitively Guided Instruction), SD Counts Mathematics, and Math Recovery Intervention Specialist, Math Recovery Leader training I have found that many of these domains of mathematics are not fostered to the highest extent that they could be.

I asked my niece once what 32-27 was and her first comment was "I can't do mental math." I told here to just try her best. Then she looked at the wall above my head as she crossed out numbers and borrowed. Then she finally got to the answered "5." I asked her to explain how she figured it out and she started writing number with her finder on the table how she crossed out and borrowed numbers. Then I asked her if there is a different way to figure it out. She replied "no" with a questionable brow, looking at me as though I was crazy to think there was another way.

Unfortunately, she has not mastered structuring numbers, decimalizing, or unitizing.

10 Instructional Shifts that Improve Student Learning This link is to a summary of the book Accessible Mathematics: 10 Instructional Shifts that Raise Student Achievement by Steven Leinwand. His number one shift is "Incorporating ongoing review into every day's lesson." I think this is extremely important because brain research shows that when a new dendrite is formed it needs to be stimulated constantly or if it's not used our brain "prunes" it, which is like deleting the information.

Snake 12 Here is a great game for adding to 12 while playing with dominoes. It is from the Origo Education website at:  http://www.origoeducation.com/ There are many more resources on this website.


Another Domino Idea I came across was playing with double-six dominoes and playing Make 10. Students are given 5 dominoes each and the rest are upside down in the middle of the two players. Students can make ten with one or two dominoes.
